Locksmith repairing a brass door lock in Washington, DC

Fix Problem Locks Before They Fail

A key that's hard to turn, a deadbolt that won't fully extend, or a handle that feels loose are all signs a lock needs attention. Left alone, small problems often turn into a lockout or a lock that no longer secures your door.

Northwest DC Locksmith repairs residential and commercial locks across Washington, DC. We diagnose the problem, explain what's causing it, and repair it when repair makes sense. If a lock is beyond saving, we'll tell you that too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to repair or replace a lock?

If the lock body is in good condition and the issue is wear, alignment or a damaged part, repair is usually the better value. If the lock is badly damaged or outdated, replacement may be the smarter choice. We'll explain both options.

Why is my key hard to turn?

The most common causes are worn pins, dirt inside the cylinder, a worn key, or a door that's out of alignment. A locksmith can find the cause and fix it before the key breaks or the lock fails.

Can you remove a broken key from a lock?

Yes. We use specialized extraction tools to remove broken keys without damaging the lock, and we can cut a new key on the spot.

Should I use WD-40 on a sticking lock?

We don't recommend it. Oil-based sprays can attract dirt and gum up the pins over time. A dry graphite or lock-specific lubricant is a better choice, and a persistent problem should be checked by a locksmith.

Do you repair commercial locks?

Yes. We repair commercial locksets, storefront locks, panic hardware and door closers for businesses across Washington, DC.

Repair First, Replace When It Makes Sense

Many lock problems in DC homes come from settling doors, seasonal swelling and worn hardware, especially in older rowhouses. These can often be fixed with an adjustment or a replacement part rather than a brand-new lock. When repair isn’t worth it, we’ll recommend a lock change or new lock installation and give you a clear price first.

If you’re repairing a lock after losing keys, ask about a lock rekey at the same time so old keys stop working.
